Cookbooks and Stocking Up

These days with the internet we can find recipes for anything anytime with a click or two.

 

Just like with a cookbook you make an addition or submission and the idea can become your own special dish.

 

I have several cookbooks.  Most are old handed down from my grandmother.  Some of the old recipes I don’t find anywhere else.  I suppose if I looked harder I would find them on the net.

 

One of my favorite books comes from Rodale Press. You my know Organic Gardening magazine and other health and wellness magazines.

 

This is more than a cookbook it’s  called “Stocking Up” this book contains recipes, how to can, preserving meat, and smoking, and just all kinds of information.   

I reference this great book all the time and keep it handy.

 

You may know the first known cookbook that was written and published by an American was Amelia Simmons. She had her book published in 1796. She lived in Hartford, Connecticut.  It is called American Cookery.

 

The full title of this book was American Cookery, or the art of dressing viands, fish, poultry, and vegetables, and the best modes of making pastes, puffs, pies, tarts, puddings, custards, and preserves, and all kinds of cakes, from the imperial plumb to plain cake: Adapted to this country, and all grades of life.

Long title I would say.

 

The word viands means: an item of food or a very choice or delicious dish.

There are only a couple first additions left but reprints are out there to be found.

The book will take you back in time.
