June to mid-July is Prime Blueberry Season.
There are several states known for their Blueberries and Michigan is one. Maine is at the top of the list also.
The Blueberry is a plant native to North America.
Native Americans used the entire plant, from the roots to the berries..
They revered the plant as a gift from the Great Spirit.
The word used for blueberry translated to Star Berry.
I was out picking Blueberries with my mother and sisters almost every summer growing up. I remember the heat and hot sun but most of all the berries.
My mom would freeze them, just a handful in a baggie. On a hot summer day taking a bag of frozen berries from the freezer to munch on them was a cooling treat.
As a child I didn't know the Blueberry was good for you but I did know I liked them..
The berries are high in antioxidants and anti-ageing properties. Want healthy skin? Eat the Blueberry.
This Star Berry is loaded with Vitamin B6, vitamin C, vitamin K and dietary fiber. They also have a minimal effect on blood sugar, positive effects on blood pressure and your cholesterol levels.
The berry is considered a Superfood.
They also contain Flavonoids. Flavonoids function as an antioxidant and are nutrients known to fight free radicals.
They also give those bright colors to plants like in the red raspberry and cranberry.
Tea is also a great source.
Whether you're going to go and pick them yourself or buy them at the market or a roadside stand enjoy some Blueberries offten.
They freeze well and are a healthy and tasty treat for children as well as adults. Enjoy them all year-long.
As I always say, sweeten with honey and move away from processed sugar.
Fresh pineapple zipped up in the blender will also sweeten instead of using sugar or artificial sweeteners .
